Welcome to the Experience Economy (Article Review)

“An experience occurs when a company intentionally uses services as the stage, and goods as props, to engage individuals in a way that creates a memorable event.”

This was written by Joseph Pine and James Gilmore in the HBR’s article “Welcome to the Experience Economy” in 1998, explaining that companies stage an experience whenever they engage customers in a personal, memorable way. This couldn’t be more true for talent acquisition today where a recruiter's job is to create a memorable candidate experience.

Crafting a good candidate experience in recruitment involves more than being transparent. Candidates should know all details about the hiring process: who will interview them, what skills are hiring managers looking for, and how to best prepare. Moreover, recruiters should send out interview guides and links to the company's blog. It's up to recruiters to make sure candidates are confidently moving forward and have the tools to succeed.

The aim is to support and challenge candidates accordingly, although the outcome may be negative they should leave the interview process with good impressions.

To conclude, the authors found that the richest experiences encompass aspects of all four realms on the picture below, forming a “sweet spot” around the area where the spectra meet.
